The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) conducts the Junior Secretariat Assistant (JSA) typing test in English (35 WPM / 10,500 KDPH) or Hindi (30 WPM / 9,000 KDPH) over 10 minutes based on Central Government / DoPT norms. Up to 5% errors are permissible. Candidates must also qualify in a companion Computer Proficiency Test (CPT) benchmarked to NSQF Level-5 covering MS Office applications. Both the typing test and CPT are qualifying; final merit selection is determined by marks obtained in the 150-mark Computer-Based Examination.

Candidates must demonstrate practical proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint up to NSQF Level-5. The CPT is qualifying in nature.
