The Kerala Government Technical Examination (KGTE) in Typewriting English Lower Grade is conducted by the Board of Technical Examinations under the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE Kerala). Paper I (Speed Test) carries 100 marks for typing a prescribed passage of 300+ words in 10 minutes (30 WPM). Each typographical error, omission, or substitution incurs a deduction of 1.80 marks. To pass, a candidate must secure at least 40.00 marks (40%) on the 300-word speed passage. Scores of 75+ award First Class with Distinction.
The minimum qualifying mark is 40 out of 100 (40%) in Paper I (Speed) over the 300-word speed passage.
At 1.80 marks deducted per mistake, a candidate can commit up to 33 mistakes (score: 40.60 marks) and still pass in Second Class.
The official KGTE Speed Paper I examination is conducted on traditional manual mechanical typewriters where keystrokes are stamped in permanent ink. Overtyping (striking over an error) is penalized as a 1.80-mark mistake, and correction whiteners or erasers are strictly prohibited. TypingGrid disables backspace to enforce authentic typewriter discipline and first-keystroke accuracy.
KGTE Lower Grade in English and Malayalam Typewriting is the legally mandatory minimum technical qualification required by Kerala PSC for all LD Typist and clerical vacancies.
